על פי חוק, יכול אדם להינשא בישראל רק לבן זוג שהוא בן דתו. כך שיהודי יכול להינשא רק ליהודי מוסלמי למוסלמי ונוצרי לנוצרי. אם רוצה אדם להינשא לבן זוג בן דת אחרת יוכל הדבר להיעשות רק בתנאי שאחד מבני הזוג ימיר את דתו לדת של בן זוגו. המרת דתו של אדם שאינו יהודי לדת היהודית, מחייבת הליך גיור, רק בסיומו של ההליך יוכל המתגייר לבוא בקהל ישראל ולהינשא לבן/בת זוג יהודי.
